New reusable pouches crafted from bio-based materials spotlight 23 endangered species in partnership with United for Wildlife

Emirates has launched a distinctive collection of amenity kits that merge passenger comfort with wildlife conservation awareness, marking a strategic evolution in how airlines address environmental responsibility whilst enhancing the customer experience.

The Dubai-based carrier’s new range, distributed to Premium Economy and Economy Class passengers on long-haul routes from December, features reusable pouches incorporating bio-based materials including cactus leather. Each kit showcases hand-drawn illustrations of endangered species across four ecosystems, sea, sky, forest, and desert, developed in partnership with United for Wildlife, the conservation initiative founded by Prince William and The Royal Foundation.

The collection highlights 23 at-risk species, from African grey parrots and Bengal tigers to totoaba fish and western gorillas. Accompanying story cards provide context about each creature’s plight, transforming a routine travel amenity into an educational touchpoint that reaches millions of passengers annually.

Elevating the Premium Economy proposition

For the first time since introducing Premium Economy in 2021, Emirates has developed a dedicated amenity kit for this cabin class. The larger pouches include a wrist strap for convenience and feature wellness products from plant-powered brand Aveda, lip balm, hand cream, and hydrating face lotion, alongside soft socks, eye shades, earplugs, and dental care items.

This enhancement reflects the airline’s efforts to strengthen its Premium Economy offering in an increasingly competitive segment. The socks and eye shades utilise 100% recycled post-consumer polyester, whilst story cards and earplug packaging derive from responsibly managed forests, addressing growing passenger expectations around sustainable materials.

Strategic alignment with conservation commitments

The partnership extends Emirates’ decade-long involvement with United for Wildlife’s Transport Taskforce, which seeks to disrupt illegal wildlife trafficking networks. The airline maintains a zero-tolerance policy on wildlife product trade, with its cargo division, Emirates SkyCargo, implementing a complete ban on hunting trophies from elephants, rhinoceros, lions, and tigers.

This initiative forms a cornerstone of the Emirates Environmental Sustainability Framework. In June 2023, the carrier achieved IATA Environmental Assessment Stage One certification and the IEnvA Illegal Wildlife Trade module certification, signalling institutional commitment beyond marketing initiatives.

Passengers can access additional content through the airline’s inflight entertainment system, ice, which features “Guardians,” a series spotlighting wildlife rangers working to protect endangered species.

The business case for purpose-driven amenities

The move exemplifies how airlines are reimagining traditional touchpoints to serve dual purposes—enhancing passenger experience whilst advancing broader environmental and social objectives. Collectible designs encourage retention and reuse, potentially reducing waste whilst creating brand affinity through purpose-aligned storytelling.

As consumer expectations increasingly factor environmental stewardship into purchasing decisions, particularly amongst premium travellers, such initiatives represent both values alignment and commercial strategy. The challenge lies in ensuring substantive action accompanies symbolic gestures—a test that will ultimately be measured by the airline’s broader environmental performance and continued conservation partnerships.

For Emirates, these amenity kits represent more than upgraded passenger comfort. They signal an airline’s recognition that the customer experience increasingly extends beyond traditional metrics of service quality to encompass how brands contribute to addressing pressing global challenges.
